Asus ROG Strix RTX 4090 OC: eighteen months as an AI workstation card

Most 4090 coverage was written in the first week after launch, by people who had the card for a fortnight and benchmarked games with it. This one was bought in August 2023 and has been in daily use since — mostly for work that has nothing to do with frame rates.

What it actually does here

The card sits in a machine built for software development, video editing, 3D modelling and rendering, and deep learning. In practice that means:

• running and fine-tuning local large language models
• modelling and rendering in Unreal Engine
• video production
• and, sometimes, Cyberpunk 2077, FC 25 or Flight Simulator 2024

That ordering matters. The 24GB of VRAM is the reason this card is in the build, not the frame rates. Model size is a hard wall — a model either fits in VRAM or it does not, and no amount of raw throughput rescues you once you spill into system memory.

The parts that are easy to underestimate

It is quiet. Genuinely quiet, under sustained load, which is not what the power figures would lead you to expect. The cooler is enormous and it earns the space it takes.

It needs that space. This is a physically large card and it wants a large case. Check clearance before ordering, not after.

The 12VHPWR connector. ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 bring a 12+4-pin connector that has its own handling requirements. It is not a drop-in replacement for the old 8-pin arrangement and it is worth understanding before the first boot rather than after.

It draws real power. Budget for it in the PSU and in the room.

Where it lands

Worth it if your work is bounded by VRAM — LLMs, large scenes, long renders. The card is designed for this, the headroom for overclocking is there, and the build quality is exceptional.

Skip it if you mainly game. You are paying an extreme price for capacity that gaming does not use, in a card that demands a large case and a serious power budget. A cheaper card will play the same games.

The boxy aesthetic will not appeal to everyone. Eighteen months in, that is still the least interesting thing about it.
